2008 Maquette October 14, 2010

Before the rush of excitement around Darkwing Duck’s new comic book incarnation this summer, in 2008 a company named Electric Tiki produced a limited collector’s edition maquette featuring D.W. standing on a sidewalk, and a banana peel.  It was an extremely small run–only 250 numbered units–and moderately expensive (about $90-100 U.S.D.).  Sadly, I never got around to picking it up myself (and though you can still find them for sale online, the price has increased).  But I remember thinking at the time that it was really some special kind of awesome to see a serious Darkwing Duck collector’s item appear 16 years after the show ceased production.

Though they (sadly) no longer have the maquette in stock, Sideshow Collectibles has a page with several nifty views of the statue.

Almost more attractive than the maquette itself is this pretty keen design illustration for it:

Personally, I’m not too fond of the design of the finished statue, or else I would have bought one. The concept art is far better. I actually prefer the “Darkly Dawns the Duck” snow globe the Disney Store was selling not too long ago.

Yeah, I’m kind of with you there. The face especially seems to have missed the mark, particularly in regards to the eyes (weirdly squinty) and bill, which often seem to have trouble translating successfully to the third and physical dimension. Still wish I had it on my shelf.
